Homeschool Eligibility 

Southern Brazoria County Homeschool Graduation (SBCHG) exists to serve families engaged in parent-directed home education. 

For SBCHG purposes, a homeschooled student is one whose parent or legal guardian is primarily responsible for directing the student's education, maintaining homeschool records, preparing or overseeing the transcript, and issuing the final homeschool diploma. 

Families may use co-ops, tutors, online curriculum, dual credit classes, hybrid programs, or other educational resources as part of their homeschool journey. These resources are welcome as long as they support the parent-directed homeschool model and do not replace the parent as the primary administrator of the student's education. 

Students enrolled full-time in a public school, private school, charter school, online school, accredited school, or diploma-granting program where that school or program serves as the official school of record and issues the transcript or diploma may not meet SBCHG eligibility requirements.

Registration for the Class of 2027 closes October 5, 2026, or sooner if capacity is reached. We encourage families to register early. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my student participate if we use an online program? Possibly. Many homeschool families use online curriculum or outside classes. The key question is whether the parent remains responsible for the student’s homeschool education, records, transcript, and diploma. 

Can my student participate if they are enrolled in Penn Foster, K12, or another online school? If the program is acting as the student’s official school and will issue the student’s transcript or diploma, the student may not meet SBCHG eligibility requirements. 

What is the main eligibility question? Who is responsible for issuing the student’s final transcript and diploma? If the parent or legal guardian is issuing the homeschool transcript and diploma, the student may meet SBCHG eligibility guidelines. 

Does using co-ops, tutors, dual credit, or outside classes disqualify my student? No. Homeschool families often use outside resources. These resources do not disqualify a student as long as the parent remains the primary administrator of the homeschool. 

Why does SBCHG have eligibility guidelines? SBCHG was created to honor parent-directed homeschool graduates. These guidelines help us stay aligned with that purpose while keeping expectations clear for families. 

Special Circumstances 

Some students don't fit neatly into the categories above, for example those homeschooled for only part of high school, those with unconventional transcripts, or those under a non-parental guardian's oversight. These situations are reviewed individually under our Special Circumstances Review Policy, available upon request. Special Circumstances requests must be submitted by September 14, 2026, three weeks before our general registration deadline, to allow time for review.
